The Fauna of Fire IslandFire Island is home to at least 28 species of mammals, 25 reptiles, and 420 birds. The waters around the island have more than 60 species of fish. Four species of animal are listed by the U.S. or New York State as endangered or threatened: piping plover, roseate tern, common tern, and the least tern.
