The Terrestrial Fauna of Fire Island:After a long absence, the red fox is making a comeback on Fire Island. The good news about them is that they like to eat small rodents (and are good at catching them), so to the extent that mice are a problem (say, in spreading Lyme disease) the foxes may be beneficial. Unfortunately, they also eat birds. This photograph was taken by FIE director Martin van Lith between Davis Park and Whale House Point.
