The Villages

We're here, we're....

Fire Island is unique among national parks in being studded by villages, each with a character of its own.

Apparently as a ploy to garner support for their attacks on the National Park Service, certain Fire Island personages have been spreading the word that the NPS is opposed to the very idea of communities on Fire Island. We find this to lack any basis, although the ideas of these people as to how the villages should relate to the park does place them somewhat at odds with the Service.

Pines Bog. The Bog in Fire Island Pines is being restored--slowly. A fence has been being built to keep out the deer, and then, under the guidance of an ecologist, species of flora are to be reintroduced. Watch the progress at the site on Atlantic Walk east of the harbor. (Although traditionally referred to as "The Bog," this land is drier than true bogs usually are.)
